I am known for painting people in museums looking at famous artworks, but this particular piece is deeply personal—it is a self-portrait of me completely immersed in Edvard Munch’s iconic Self-Portrait Between the Bed and the Clock.

Munch painted his masterpiece at the end of his life, standing between a handless clock and a bed, facing his own mortality with a profound, stark vulnerability.

By inserting myself into this scene, I wanted to create a dialogue across time, exploring my own relationship with aging and the relentless passage of time.

Because you view me from behind, you are not just looking at me; you are looking with me into the abyss of time and mortality. They say we all have two lives, and the second one begins the moment we realize we only have one. The time is now.

All the best, Gerard
