This work of 30 x 30 cm shows a man engaging with Barnett Newman’s seminal 1966 canvas Who's Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue 1. By letting the expressive power of a colossal red field confront and envelop the spectator, Newman's painting acts as a vehicle for a profound emotional and spiritual experience.

For me, that title takes on a deeper meaning today; it feels incredibly relevant because I see a lot of people being afraid of something nowadays. Symbolically, the man in my painting is confronting his own fears by standing right in front of that overwhelming red space. He is embracing the tiger.

Gameshow- Painting Of Two Men Playing Lingo On Dutch Television

One quiet evening at home, I was unwinding in front of the television when I stumbled upon Lingo, a classic game show where two teams try to guess a word within 5 turns. This painting captures Team 1, featuring candidates Maarten and Wessel, as they attempt to solve a 5-letter word starting with the letter "P."

I felt inspired to freeze this fleeting moment of television broadcasting and preserve it through the slow, deliberate medium of painting. By transferring a fleeting TV reality into a permanent painted reality, a lighthearted game show transforms into a profound space for quiet observation.

The scene brought to mind the poignant words of social critic Neil Postman, who once warned that "a culture fully dedicated to entertainment becomes a trivial culture," and added that "the problem isn't that we're laughing instead of thinking, but that we don't know what we're laughing about and why we stopped thinking."

Through this lens, I view the painting as a quiet warning against the dangers of excessive entertainment, which risks reducing society to passivity and detachment. It serves as a reminder to cherish our shared moments of joy, while quietly inviting us to look a little deeper at the modern media that shapes our everyday lives.

Joan Miró's Spanish Dancer uses simple lines, shapes, and textures to capture the rhythm and energy of flamenco. Instead of a realistic painting. Miró broke the dancer down into basic symbols. This let him show the feeling of the dance rather than just what it looked like.

One quiet evening at home in 2006, I was settling down in front of the television when the clock struck eight and the Dutch nightly news broadcast began. This painting captures the prominent anchor, Noraly Beijer, as she delivers the day’s headline events to living rooms across the nation.

I watched the sleek studio set and the familiar presence of Noraly, completely fascinated by how seamlessly our world's most critical events are packaged and broadcast straight into our peaceful domestic spaces.

I felt inspired to freeze this fleeting moment of television broadcasting and preserve it through the slow, deliberate medium of painting. By transferring this image from the television into a permanent painted reality, a fast-paced media update transforms into a profound space for quiet observation.

For me 'The Show' serves as a heartfelt reminder to remain deeply conscious and connected to the world around us, while quietly inviting us to look a little deeper at modern media and entertainment programs that shape our everyday lives.

In this painting, I portray the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, pausing before a vibrant red double Pop Art portrait of Anne Frank. I was directly inspired to create this piece after hearing Rutte speak publicly about the realities of modern war.

With this painting, it is my sincere hope that we don't forget the raw horrors of war, with Anne Frank standing as one of its most enduring and poignant symbols.

Vliegtuigstreep 2 (Airplane Contrail 2) marks a profound minimalist pivot in my oeuvre.

Here, I confront the contemporary landscape at its most basic and pristine element: a brilliant azure sky sliced by the white geometry of airplane condensation trails. Or perhaps it is one of those chemtrails people talk about—I leave that entirely to your own imagination.

I just wanted to create a minimalist painting that is very much photorealistic too.

In my work, I love to capture the quiet moments of people in museums, entirely lost in the act of looking. This painting captures a viewer lost in Tom Wesselmann’s iconic Hot Lips, a Pop Art masterpiece where disembodied lips in fiery shades of red use the seductive allure of post-war consumer culture to critique the objectification of women in mass media.

This tribute serves as a warm embrace of art history, transforming Wesselmann's critique of modern advertising into a joyful moment of personal discovery and deep contemplation.

Orange Hat is a celebrated painting by American artist Alex Katz. The artwork captures his wife and primary muse, Ada, wearing a sun hat. Its meaning revolves around capturing 'the immediate present' and highlighting Katz's signature intersection of traditional portraiture, bold Pop-art stylization, and fashion.

It is available at gallery Kelly Arty (Fontainebleau, France).
