I am deeply fascinated by the visual landscape of modern consumer culture and how we interact with the everyday commercial environments that surround us. This painting, The Product, captures people descending an escalator while leaving an Ikea store with all their purchases.
For me, there is a fascinating tension in seeing complete strangers packed so tightly into each other's personal space—standing physically inches apart, yet mentally miles apart with no communication whatsoever.
The escalator almost acts as a conveyor belt to systematically remove people from the store. It makes me wonder who the real product is. The painting serves as a sharp visual mirror to our contemporary consumer habits, while quietly inviting us to look a little deeper at the ordinary, modern world around us.
All the best, Gerard
